My brother met us at one the mall for lunch and a movie today. After having lunch all together, we split up. He and X went to one movie and I and the wife went to another (hence the use of the word "date").
We went to see Pan's Labyrinth. Pretty darn good film if you don't mind subtitles... and violence. There's plenty of it in that movie. It's billed as a "fairytale for adults" and, well, it's most assuredly not for little children. The story takes place in Spain, in 1944, during the Spanish civil war. Ofelia, the main character of the story, is a little girl whose mother has re-married to a sadistic, but influential captain in the Spanish army. The film does a pretty compelling job of showing the cruelty and pain of the real world compared to the splendor (and sometimes, terror) of the realm of fantasy. The end left us both scratching our heads. It's not a happy ending, but it does leave you feeling somewhat alright about how things turn out.
In between lunch and the movie, we let X toss pennies into the water fountain out in front of the main street. I grabbed a wish-in-progress. If you look closely (click on the picture to see larger versions), you can see the wish in flight.
